1/1/15 Update: FOSI recently changed the name of A Platform for Good to Good Digital Parenting. This article and all links have been updated to reflect that change.

After our Co-Author Amy Jones Anichini wrote The Power of Positive Communication for FOSI’s Good Digital Parenting, they invited her to contribute another article. This time, Amy discusses how we can take control of negative encounters with other people and make steps toward breaking the cycle of negativity that seems so prevalent these days.

When you’re on the receiving end of harsh words, you feel hurt and powerless. You might think your only options are retaliating or retreating into yourself to try to protect your feelings. However, you have more power than you think.

Even though we can’t control what other people choose to say or do, we can play a role in ending the cycle of negativity and steering communication in a positive direction. The key is focusing on what you CAN control. Amy offers tips for how to (1) deflect the rude or negative comments others direct at us and (2) respond in a harmless way to break the cycle of negativity.

If you haven’t checked out FOSI, make sure you do. Here’s what we love about this organization:

  1. They offer tools to help parents teach their children how to be good digital citizens.
  2. They share stories about how people have used technology and social media to make a difference or do something good.
  3. Like Baffle That Bully, they are focused on solutions.

Today, let’s be the ones to make that first positive comment, whether online or face-to-face. Then, let’s ask our children to do the same. Together, we can break the cycle of negativity.
